Bringing Laurence Sterne back to Coxwold
- 14 September 2018 -
Life can be full of little coincidences. Earlier this week we stayed in Beaune on our way home to Coxwold in North Yorkshire where we have our luxury self catering holiday cottage. Immediately opposite the entrance to our hotel was an antiquarian bookshop with a table of mostly modern books for sale at a discount. Nothing so unusual about that, but what immediately caught my wife’s eye was one of only a handful of leather bound tomes on the table with the words “Voyage Sentimental” on the spine. It was none other than a copy of an 1841 Paris edition of Laurence Sterne’s famous work, “Sentimental Journey”, packed full of beautiful engravings.
In this, the 250th anniversary year of Laurence Sterne writing, at Shandy Hall in Coxwold, his “Sentimental Journey through France and Italy” here we were in France, on our way back from Italy to Coxwold in North Yorkshire, with an antique copy of his famous book in our hands. Inside, sadly, a price of 80 euros was pencilled but, on enquiry, I found that it was for sale at a modest 5 euros! How could I resist! So now that copy of Laurence Sterne’s Sentimental Journey has been repatriated to Coxwold! Just a shame my French isn’t good enough to read the book, although the engravings are delightful. Please ask to see the book if you stay with us at our luxury self catering holiday cottage in Coxwold. We would be delighted to share our good fortune and point you in the direction of Shandy Hall, a mere 5 minute walk away from Coxwold Cottages.
