Coxwold by the Sea? The perfect holiday location!
- 25 October 2018 -
Just an hour’s drive from our holiday cottage in picturesque Coxwold (just inside the westernmost boundary of the North York Moors national park) and we can be enjoying the fabulous North Yorkshire coast. And the drive along the A170 though such lovely places as Helmsley, Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale means the journey is enjoyable as well as the destination as there are numerous distractions along the way including some great farm shops. Coxwold by the Sea? The perfect holiday location!
Taking advantage of the recent sunshine we headed for Cayton Bay which is just south of Scarborough. This is a magnificent sweeping bay with a wide, year-round beach. In the summer, Cayton Bay is a magnet for holidaymakers and is a beautiful place to explore. At this time of the year there were more hardened surfers out having fun in the sea than there were walkers on the sand, meaning we almost had the beach to ourselves. The beach is also popular with bird watchers, fossil hunters and those who just want to relax and unwind – although the walk down is a bit steep!
What I found particularly interesting were the pill boxes, literally strewn along the beach, victims of coastal erosion since they were built to defend our shores during the Second World War. Looking at them now, smashed on the beach, I am not sure how well they could have resisted an enemy invasion force! Having said that, the surviving pill boxes, although battered, are an important group of such beach front defences and make unusual landmarks on the beach.
After a bracing walk along the beach, although there is Lucy’s Beach Shack near the beach, instead we headed for Oliver’s Mount which overlooks the whole of Scarborough. The Café on the top is a gem with home cooked food at reasonable prices in a spotless restaurant. Highly recommended! Once back at Coxwold Cottages we could enjoy the Autumnal leaves and majestic countryside where our luxury self-catering holiday cottage is located. We are very lucky to be able to enjoy the best of all worlds – scenic countryside, coastal walks and places like York and Harrogate all no more than an hour away. Magical Yorkshire – the perfect location for a holiday!
